1. A machine implemented method, comprising:
flushing a cache that is used to store a data write request identified by a unique transmit identifier to a data storage device by a remote computer that receives the data write request from a local computer as part of a set of data write requests via a plurality of pathways; sending an acknowledgement to the local computer by the remote computer that data has been flushed; setting an indicator by a local computer at a pre-determined memory storage location accessible to the local computer and the remote computer for indicating to the remote computer that a next write request is a metadata write request; monitoring the pre-determined memory storage location by the remote computer to determine when the next write request is the metadata write request; transmitting by the local computer, after receiving the acknowledgement, the metadata write request, wherein the metadata write request corresponds to the data write request flushed by the remote computer; checking by the remote computer that the data write request has been executed prior to executing the metadata write request; and preventing by the local computer sending any other metadata write request until the local computer receives an acknowledgement from the remote computer that the metadata write request has been executed by the remote computer.
