PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the size of an element without decreasing a polarization wave extinction ratio in a substrate type waveguide element that outputs polarization input into one waveguide from the other.SOLUTION: A substrate type waveguide element includes an orientation coupling section 1b and a polarization conversion section 1a. The orientation coupling section 1b is a first segment including a first waveguide 13b1 having a square cross-section, a second waveguide 13b2 having a square cross-section, and a first slab section 13b3 that communicates the first waveguide 13b1 and the second waveguide 13b2 and is thinner than the first waveguide 13b1 and the second waveguide 13b2. The polarization conversion section 1a is a second segment including a third waveguide 13a2 that is extension of the second waveguide 13b2 and a first taper section 13a3 that is extension of the first slab 13b3. |
