Systems and methods for optimizing the operation of a fuel dispensing system comprising a pump assembly in a fuel dispenser. The fuel dispenser comprises a control system in electronic communication with a motor of a pump and with a displacement sensor operatively connected to a fuel flow meter. The pump is located within the fuel dispenser housing, and the motor is operative to turn a shaft coupled with a pumping element to pump fuel from a storage tank through the fuel dispenser. A method of controlling the fuel dispenser comprises receiving at the control system information representative of the flow rate of fuel through the fuel flow meter, receiving at the control system information representative of at least one operational characteristic of the motor, and comparing the information representative of the flow rate of fuel to the information representative of the at least one operational characteristic of the motor.
