<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer and a device for setting a print pattern for easily setting a layout pattern, wherein print target data are arranged in print areas defined by template data, to a predetermined layout pattern. <P>SOLUTION: When print data including print target data are received from an external device 100 while a print pattern setting mode is established, all the layout patterns, in which the print target data are arranged in respective print areas defined by the template data, are generated (S12). On each of the layout patterns, setting propriety check processing (S15) is carried out. For a layout pattern allowing printing of all the print target data, preview data are generated to be displayed on a liquid crystal display 55 (S29).
