An inserter 400 for anchoring a bone anchor comprises a driver assembly 404 and a blade engagement member 420. The driver assembly 404 has a driver shaft 414 and a distal engagement feature (486, see figure 76) that engages a drive feature of the bone anchor 7. The blade engagement member 420 is configured to releasably engage a retractor blade 14 of a retractor assembly and is rotationally independent from the driver assembly 404 such that when a retractor blade 14 is engaged to the blade engagement member 420, the retractor blade 14 does not rotate with the driver assembly 404. In use, the retractor blade engages a groove on the blade engagement member 406, whilst the head of the screw is inserted into receiver 408 (see figure 77). Rotation of the thumbwheel 412 turns shaft 410 and pulls the receiver 408 into the blade engagement member 406 via connectors 452 in apertures 442 to firmly grip the screw head via deflectable flanges 434. The connectors move within slots 488 so that driver engagement means 486 engages the screw head. Rotation of driver 414 via end 418 then turns the screw. |
