A speed control system operable to control a motor vehicle to operate in accordance with a set-speed value. The system is operable to allow a user to increase the set-speed value by actuation of a vehicle accelerator control member 161. The accelerator control member 161 has actuation values that are within a prescribed range of actuation values from a first non-zero actuation value (d1, fig 6) to a second actuation value (d2) that is greater than the first. When the accelerator control member 161 is being actuated by an acceleration actuation value less than the second acceleration actuation value (d2), the system is further operable to apply powertrain torque only to control the vehicle to operate in accordance with the set-speed value. Human machine interfaces (HMI) 18, 20, 20HD are provided so that a user may input the target vehicle speed. Also claimed is a method of controlling a vehicle. |
