System and method for directional sound transmission with a linear array of exponentially spaced loudspeakers

A system and method for the directional transmission of sound is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system comprises an audio source configured to generate an audio signal, a control module configured to receive the audio signal and generate a driving signal, based at least in part on the audio signal, and an array comprising a plurality of loudspeakers, wherein the loudspeakers are linearly arranged such that the spacing between two adjacent loudspeakers increases along the array. In a particularly, embodiment, the spacing increases exponentially, and broadband dipole loudspeakers are used.

1. A system for sound transmission, the system comprising:
an audio source configured to generate an audio signal; a control module having an input for receiving the audio signal and an output for producing a plurality of driving signals based on the audio signal; a line array comprising a plurality of loudspeakers each having an input for receiving a corresponding one of the plurality of driving signals, each of the plurality of loudspeakers is configured to produce sound in response to the corresponding one of the plurality of driving signals, wherein the plurality of loudspeakers are arranged such that the spacing between two adjacent loudspeakers increases along the line array; and a delay coupled to each of one or more of the driving signals and configured to delay each of the one or more of the driving signals for driving each corresponding one or more of the plurality of loudspeakers, wherein each delay is an amount of time similar to a time that the produced sound travels a distance from the output to each of the one or more of the plurality of loudspeakers.
