PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for the side wall which is excellent in low heat generation properties and ozone resistance when molded to a tire and a pneumatic tire using the rubber composition.SOLUTION: A rubber composition for side wall comprises a diene rubber and carbon black, and the diene rubber contains a modified polymer obtained by reacting the double bonds of a conjugated diene polymer with a nitrone compound and natural rubber. The content of the modified polymer in the diene rubber is 8-65 mass%; the nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of carbon black is 20-60 [×10m/kg]; and the content of carbon black is 30-67 pts. mass to 100 pts. mass of the diene rubber.
