A method for extending an existing clock synchronization domain having an existing primary base station and one or more existing secondary base stations wirelessly coupled to the existing primary base station and being configured to derive a clock signal from a clock generated by the existing primary base station, comprising: periodically scanning, by the existing primary base station, for one or more additional base stations for a predetermined period of time, the one or more additional base stations not already being members of the existing clock synchronization domain; detecting an additional base station and a unique identifier assigned to the additional base station in a broadcast message periodically transmitted by the additional base station; comparing the unique identifier detected in the message broadcast by the additional base station to be different than a unique identifier assigned to the existing primary base station; transitioning, by the existing primary base station, to be a new secondary base station, and the additional base station transitioning to be a new primary base station in the existing clock synchronization domain; using, by the new secondary base station, a clock signal in the message broadcast by the new primary base station to derive a clock signal that is synchronized to the new primary base station clock; and periodically broadcasting by the new secondary base station the unique identifier assigned to the new primary base station thereby creating a single clock synchronization domain comprising the new primary base station, the one or more existing secondary base stations and the new secondary base station.
