PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable highly accurate and smooth focusing when adjusting focus using both an MF function and AF function.SOLUTION: A focus adjustment unit includes: image capturing means for photoelectrically converting light passing through an image capturing optical system that includes a focusing lens; manual adjustment means which moves the focusing lens in response to an instruction through manual manipulation; focus detection means which detects focusing condition based on signals generated from the image capturing means; determination means which determines the presence of an in-focus point within a predefined range from a current position of the focusing lens based on a result of detection by the focus detection means; control means which provides control to correct the position of the focusing lens moved by the manual adjustment means in accordance with the result of determination by the determination means; and storage means which stores speed of the focusing lens when moving in response to manual manipulation. The control means provides control to move the focusing lens at speed based on the speed stored in the storage means.
