Provided are a packet forwarding method and VxLAN gateway: receiving a VxLAN packet, the payload of the VxLAN packet comprising a communication packet transmitted by a first VM to a second VM; according to a first VNI in the packet header of the VxLAN packet and the IP address of a second VM in the payload, determining the second VNI of a subnet where the next hop device of the communication packet is located; and according to the second VNI, encapsulating the communication packet, and forwarding the encapsulated VxLAN packet to the next hop device via a channel corresponding to the second VNI, thus forwarding the VxLAN packet without modifying the communication packet in the payload of the VxLAN packet by the VxLAN gateway, and improving the forwarding efficiency of the VxLAN packet.
