339,381. Schat, A. P. Sept. 18, 1929. Disc.-A wooden winding drum 1 for the fall of a. ship's lifeboat has sheet iron side plates 3, 4 which can be engaged by brake discs 8, 12. The drum rotates about a shaft 5 which has a part of square cross-section to fit within a square aperture in the hub of the disc 8 and is threaded at the adjacent end to receive a nut 10 and a lock nut 11. The disc 8 has a sliding fit within a square aperture formed in a bracket 9 secured to the deck. The disc 12 is supported similarly in the bracket 13 and supports the other end of the shaft 5 which is formed with a screw thread of relatively steep pitch to receive the threaded hub of a lever 14. The apparatus is adjusted by the nut 10 so that when the lever 14 is vertical, one quarter of a turn of it will pull the shaft 5 to the left to such an extent as to cause the brake discs to clamp the drum. |
