The present invention relates to a water purifier notifying the water intake amount and a control method thereof. The water purifier includes: a discharging module which has a discharging button pressed to discharge purified water; a communication module which is configured to communicate with a mobile communication terminal of a user; a fingerprint recognition module which is formed to be integrated with the discharging button to recognize the fingerprint of the user; and a control unit which communicates with a short-ranged communication module through the communication module to identify the user when the mobile communication terminal of the user enters a set range to drive the short-ranged communication module of the mobile communication terminal, identifies the user through the fingerprint collected in the fingerprint recognition module when the user comes in contact with the user without driving the short-ranged communication module, discharges more purified water than the purified water being discharged by the user coming in contact with the discharging button when the total amount of the discharged purified water regarding the user accumulated by integrating respective methods after identifying the user is less than a reference value representing a preset encouraged intake amount, and transmits the purified water discharging amount accumulated for the user to the mobile communication terminal of a guardian corresponding to the user when the user is determined to be elderly based on the identification result of the user.
