Embodiments of the present invention provide an authentication system and method for use with online electronic transactions to enable authentication of payee data before performing the payment transaction. The authentication system builds an authentication file of validated payee details. In response to receiving a plurality of payment information items for a payee input to the authentication module by a payer, the plurality of payment information items for the payee are compared with the payee's verified data. An alert can be output to the payer in response to identifying any discrepancy between the plurality of payment information items input by the payer and verified details for the payee.
