[Class 53.] Electrodes; separators; cells; cases; gas exits.-An accumulator plate consists of a lead sheet corrugated in two directions which may be at right-angles. The corrugations may be of such depth that sufficient electrolyte for the working of the accumulator is retained between the plates and separators, and the corrugations in one direction are preferably shallower than the others. The Figure shows an accumulator provided with plates as described above. Each plate is provided with a connecting tag 15 and the plates of each set are joined together by means of interleaving lead strips 16, all the tags and strips being fused together by a blowpipe. Each set of plates is then secured to a bus-bar 18 which consists of lead antimony alloy surrounding a bronze strap 20 carrying two terminal bolts 19. The bus-bar is of channel section and has a hole 22, concentric with a hole 21 in the strap 20, and a tubular projection 23 forming a gas exit. Instead of the strips 16 being used for connecting the plates together, the tags 15 may be bent over and fused together directly. The plates are enclosed in separating sheaths which may be made of nitrated cellulose paper and the whole is enclosed in two cases, an inner sealed case 31 of lead and an outer steel case 30. The plates are formed in a solution containing 10 per cent sulphuric acid and from ¢-1 per cent of potassium chlorate. In order to clean the plates before forming they are subjected to an electrolytic treatment in dilute sulphuric acid, the current being reversed every fifteen minutes. According to the Provisional Specification the plates may be corrugated in one direction only and they may also be perforated. Specifications 357,505, 357,506 and 357,507 are referred to. |
