[Class 100 (iv).] A voice-operated apparatus for the printing of a phonetic language comprises a rotary transparent disc, one surface at least of which is coated with a translucent or opaque layer, together with means for recording sound-wave formations on this layer, and a plurality of light-sensitive devices each of which corresponds to a particular component of the phonetic system, and which operates to select the corresponding sound wave-formation recorded in the translucent or opaque layer and by means of electric relays selectively effects the operation of the keys of a type-printing device. The spoken words are transmitted from the microphone 1 through the transformer 2 and a rheostat volume-control 3 to an amplifier 4, and thence through the secondary of the transformer 5 to a coil 6, vibrating in the field of a strong electromagnet 7. The coil 6 carries a scratching needle which is in contact with the surface of the rotating transparent disc 9 coated with a translucent layer of wax. The vibration is recorded on this layer which on continued rotation of the disc passes between a source of intense parallel light and a number of selenium crystals 12 arranged in shapes which correspond to the wave forms of the components of the spoken words as recorded on the disc. Both poles of each such shape are connected to a relay 13 and serve to attract an armature 17 operating a particular typewriter key on activation of the corresponding selenium cell. Upon continued rotation of the disc, the wax is electrically heated, more wax is supplied, and the scratched trace is erased by a roller. |
