A biomaterial composition comprising (1) a cellulose derivative polymer wherein an unprotected group on the cellulose derivative polymer backbone is substituted with covalently bound crosslinkable groups, wherein said crosslinkable groups are methacrylate groups, and wherein the cellulose derivative is methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, or a combination thereof; and (2) a redox initiator system including an oxidizing agent and a reducing agent, wherein the oxidizing agent and reducing agent are separated within the composition, wherein the degree of substitution is between about 1 and about 6%, wherein the polymer concentration is between about 2 and about 15% (w/v), and wherein the initial molecular weight of the polymer is between about 10 and about 1000 kDa.
