A data writer may be generally configured at least with a write pole adjacent to and separated from a side shield and a trailing shield. The side shield may be formed of a first material and configured with a trailing box region that is at least partially filled with a flux density insert formed of a second material that is different than the first material.

An apparatus comprising a write pole adjacent to and separated from a first side shield and a trailing shield, the first side shield comprising a first magnetic material and configured with a first trailing box region defined by a reduced thickness notch in the side shield and at least partially filled with a first flux density insert comprising a horizontal lamination of a plurality of layers with each layer continuously extending from a common horizontal surface of the trailing box region, the first flux density insert comprising a second magnetic material, different than the first magnetic material.
