<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power inverter circuit capable of reducing power loss which accompanies passing through a chopper circuit that is not used, although a multistep chopper circuit is utilized. <P>SOLUTION: The power inverter circuit includes a plurality of chopper circuits between a first end and a second end, for performing a first transmission operation which boosts the power inputted in the first end and then outputs it from the second end, as well as a second transmission operation which steps down the power inputted in the second end and outputs it from the first end. The plurality of chopper circuits include a first circuit which is so formed as to step up/down operation in both directions, and a second circuit formed to perform step-up operation. At the time of first transmission operation, the first circuit and the second circuit perform a step-up operation advancing from the first end to the second end. At the time of second transmission operation, the first circuit and the second circuit perform step-down operation advancing from the second end to the first end.
