[Class 108 (i).] In an ambulance wherein one stretcher is supported above another bv a carrier mounted on four parallel levers and the lowering of the carrier compresses springs which subsequently assist the raising of the carrier, the springs are connected to the levers by cables. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the carrier, comprising runners 5 and cross-bars 7, is supported on tubular levers 8 pivoted at 9 on brackets 2 supporting the runners 1 of the lower stretcher. The springs 12, mounted in the levers 8, are compressed when the carrier is lowered by blocks 13 on cables 14 which are connected at 16 to the brackets 2. A pivoted bolt 19 actuated through a Bowden wire 18 by a handle 17 engages notches 20, 21<1> in a member 21 to lock the carrier in its raised or lowered position. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, in which the carrier comprising runners 36 and cross-bars 38 is supported on levers 34 pivoted in bearings 23, the springs 46, mounted in tubes 45, are compressed when the carrier is lowered by piston members 48 on cables 44 passing over pulleys 46<1> on uprights 30 and connected by shackles 43 to a bar 42 connecting two of the levers 34. The carrier is locked in its raised position by a hook 50, pivoted to a runner 36 and engaging a pin 51 on a bracket 52, the hook being operated to release the carrier by a handle 53 connected by a block 54 to a sliding rod 55. When the carrier is lowered spring-controlled bolts 58, secured to or integral with the handle 53, snap under lugs 61 on the runners 22. Bleed holes at the end of the tubes 45 adjacent the members 48 regulate the movement of the carrier and buffers 49 on the uprights 30 cushion the return of the levers 34 to their vertical position. The lower runners may be provided with sliding or pivoted extensions extending beyond the rear of the vehicle to facilitate the loading or unloading of the lower stretcher.
