Methods and Devices for Rapid Assessment of Severity of Injury

Methods and devices for rapid assessment of the severity of injury not due to a natural disease based upon measurement of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) are provided.

1. A method of assessing severity of a radiation injury on epithelial tissue in a human subject, said method comprising the steps of
(a) obtaining a plasma sample from said human subject within 12 hours after the injury has occurred; (b) applying antibodies capable of binding to neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) to said plasma sample; (c) detecting antibodies bound to NGAL, thereby measuring a level of NGAL in a said plasma sample; and (d) characterizing said plasma sample with respect to NGAL received from said injured epithelial tissue, wherein the higher the level of NGAL in said plasma sample the more severely is the epithelial tissue injured.
