A cathode for a lithium-sulfur battery comprises a particulate mixture deposited on a current collector, the particulate mixture comprising an admixture of (i) composite particles formed from a composite comprising electroactive sulfur material melt-bonded to electroconductive carbon material, and (ii) conductive carbon filler particles. In one aspect, the conductive carbon filler particles form 1 to 15 weight % of the total weight of the composite particles and conductive carbon filler particles. In another aspect, the composite particles comprise 10 to 15 weight % of electroconductive carbon material based on the total weight of the composite. The electroconductive carbon material may be selected from at least one of carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibres, graphene and carbon black. The conductive carbon filler particles are preferably particles of carbon black. The electroactive sulfur material is preferably elemental sulfur. A process of forming the cathode is also disclosed, the method comprising forming the composite particles from a composite comprising electroactive sulfur material melt-bonded to electroconductive carbon material, milling the composite particles with the conductive carbon filler particles to form a particulate mixture, and depositing the particulate material onto the current collector. A compounding device may be used to knead together the electroactive sulfur material (in a molten state) and electroconductive carbon material to form an agglomerate which is ground to form the composite particles. |
