A flame detection method, and apparatus and a computer program product are provided for detecting image objects having behaviour consistent with fire flames in an image sequence e.g. a flame flicker area, possibly using a brightness bitmap. An image object in the image sequence is identified as a candidate flame object and a relative position of at least a portion of the candidate flame object is tracked between different ones of the plurality of image frame, possibly using combined image bitmap frames. A count is maintained representing position changes of the at least a portion of the candidate flame object between pairs of different image frames in the image sequence. Candidate flame objects are identified as having behaviour consistent with a flame object when the count indicates predominant movement of the at least a portion of the candidate flame object towards the top of the image frame along a positive time axis of the image sequence. |
