Provided are an apparatus and method for random access in a wireless communications system. According to an embodiment, a method for transmitting a random access preamble in a wireless communications system comprises the following steps: estimating path loss based on downstream link signals received from a base station; selecting a random access area based on the path loss; determining transmission power based on a false alarm probability for the selected random access area; and transmitting a random access preamble to the base station based on the determined transmission power. In addition, provided are a base station apparatus for detecting the preamble signal transmitted by the terminal, and a method thereof.
