[Classes 39 (ii) and 75 (iv).] In an electric battery lamp in which a slidable member for altering the focus of the lamp also operates a circuit closing device, the latter comprises a pair of relatively slidable contacts, one of which is a strip having an inclined surface and passing through the other, the arrangement being such that at certain relative positions of the contacts the strip clears the other contact but at other positions said inclined surface engages it. In the form shown, a spring 16 presses the top pole of a battery 15 up against a conducting strip 18 which extends across the lower face of a disc 17 forming the base of a cup-shaped pressing 17 fixed in the casing 2, one end of the strip 18 being bent upwardly to form a longitudinal contact strip 1. The latter is pressed along its centre line into the form of a shallow channel 1 to strengthen it and to give it the necessary inclination, and it passes through an aperture 3 in an insulating plate 4. A notch 9 in this plate receives one end of a contact strip 7 which extends across the lower face of the plate and passes through the aperture 3, a central opening 8 in the plate allowing the strip 7 to contact with the centre contact of a bulb 10 in a socket 5. This socket is carried by a conducting strip 12 which extends across the upper face of the plate 4 at right-angles to the strip 7 and is bent so as to extend along the inside of the casing 2 into sliding engagement with a conducting strip 13 extending to the bottom cap 14. The strip 12 carries a rivet, pin, or screw 19 slidable in a slot 20 in the casing and fixed to a finger piece 6 which slides in a guide 21.
