PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an increase in combustion noise at a time of starting a compression ignition engine.SOLUTION: A control unit (ECM 100) of a compression ignition engine starting system (engine system 1) exerts a control to sequentially inject a fuel to a plurality of cylinders 11 for a period from the end of a compression cycle to the beginning of an expansion cycle and to burn an air-fuel mixture in the cylinders 11 by compression ignition at a time of starting the multi-cylinder engine (engine 10). The control unit retards injection timing of injecting the fuel next time from injection time of injecting the fuel first time by as much as a predetermined crank angle with respect to compression top dead center.
