<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing bast fiber capable of drastically reducing the amount of water consumption and drastically reducing a retting period by improving the performance of preliminary fibrillation prior to retting treatment. <P>SOLUTION: A method of producing bast fiber, which is a method of obtaining bast fiber from a bast of a bast plant, comprises the steps of: subjecting bast T of a bast plant to the preliminary fibrillation; and subjecting the preliminary fibrillated bast to the retting treatment.
