<p>The invention relates to a device comprising a substrate20 having a surface comprising a plurality of discrete sites21 and at least one reference area 22 wherein each discrete site 21is configured to hold at least one carrier means. The reference area 22comprises at least one coding region 24, and the coding region24 is configured to represent a binary code. The invention further relates to a method for determining the location of a reference area on a substrate 20 having a surface comprising a plurality of discrete sites 21 and at least one reference area 22, wherein at least one image is acquired using reflected or transmitted light from the substrate 20.Both the discrete sites 21 and the reference area 22 are detected within this image, wherein at least one sequence of discrete sites 21in the reference area 22 is interpreted as a binary code and used to determine the location of the reference area on the substrate 20 by decoding the binary code.</p> |
