1. A method for making a composite polyamide membrane comprising a porous support and a thin film polyamide layer, wherein the method comprises the steps of applying a polar solution comprising a polyfunctional amine monomer and a non-polar solution comprising a polyfunctional acyl halide monomer to a surface of a porous support and interfacially polymerizing the monomers to form a thin film polyamide layer, wherein the method is characterized by including a substituted benzamide monomer within the non-polar solution, wherein the substituted benzamide monomer is distinct from the polyfunctional acyl halide monomer and is represented by at least one of Formulae (IIIa and IIIb):wherein:
i) X, X′, X″ and X″′ are independently selected from the following functional groups: acyl halide, carboxylic acid, carboxylate and sulfonic acid which are located meta, ortho or para to the benzyl amide group, or one or both of: a) X and X′, and b) X″ and X″′ collectively form an anhydride group; with the proviso that at least two of X, X′, X″ and X″′ are selected from acyl halide and anhydride functional groups; and ii) Z is selected from at least one of: aryl, alkyl, alkenyl, and alkoxy wherein each may be unsubstituted or substituted with a functional group selected from: carboxylic acid, carboxylate, phosphonic acid and sulfonic acid; iii) with the proviso that the substituted benzamide monomer comprises at least one functional group selected from carboxylic acid, carboxylate, phosphonic acid and sulfonic acid. |
