[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] In gear-shifting mechanism suitable for vehicles, selection and operation are effected by sliding and rocking, respectively, a rock shaft M, Fig. 2, and these movements are brought about by rocking and sliding, respectively, a rack bar Q<1> which engages between lateral flanges Q<2> the teeth of a sector Q fast on the rock shaft M. A cover plate N<1> for the housing A of the change-speed gearing supports a bearing N for the rock shaft M and also a mounting N<2>, Fig. 6, for the rack bar Q<1> holding the bar and segment in gear relation. The rack bar Q<1> is connected by a flexible circuitous shaft R to the shank T<1>, Fig. 4, of a control handle T near the cowl S. Selection of the gears in the housing A is thus effected by turning the handle T, and changing of the gears by pushing or pulling the handle T towards or from the cowl S. The means by which selection is effected by the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 forms the subject-matter of Specification 427,471. A rightward selective movement of the rock-shaft M against a spring U can be effected only when a notch V<2>, Fig. 6, in a plate V<1> carried by the shaft M registers with a fixed stop disc V. Specification 427,470 is referred to in which the change-speed gearing is used in series with and in front of speed-responsive automatically-variable gearing. |
