A process of preparing a catalyst material, the process comprising: contacting an electrically conductive support material with a proton-conducting polyazole-based polymer that is not a membrane, and thereafter applying a precursor compound of a catalytically active material suitable for a fuel cell or applying a catalytically active material suitable for a fuel cell itself to the support material, and if a precursor compound of the catalytically active material is applied, converting the precursor compound into the catalytically active material by reduction, thereby obtaining a catalyst material comprising the electrically conductive support material, the proton-conducting polyazole-based polymer, and the catalytically active material, wherein the catalytically active material is not masked by the polyazole-based polymer.
