PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having sufficiently low viscosity (&eegr;), sufficiently small rotational viscosity (γ1), a large elastic constant (K), and a negative dielectric anisotropy (&Dgr;&egr;) with a large absolute value, without decreasing a refractive anisotropy (&Dgr;n) and nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T), and to provide a liquid crystal display element such as a VA type element using the above composition, which has excellent display qualities and fast response speed while eliminating or suppressing display defects.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises: a compound represented by formula (I-1) as a first component; a compound represented by formula (I-2) as a second component; and a compound having a negative dielectric anisotropy (&Dgr;&egr;) having an absolute value of larger than 3 as a third component. A liquid crystal display is provided, which uses the above liquid crystal composition. |
