A medical device having a forwardly-projecting needle and a selectively-movable needle cap that can be variously positioned to cover all or a portion of the needle, depending upon whether the device is, for example, being transported, aspirated or used to inject a therapeutic fluid. The device can optionally be configured to enable retraction of the needle into the body for safe disposal following use.

1. A medical device comprising in combination:
a body; a forwardly-projecting needle; and a needle cap, wherein the needle cap is generally tubular, comprises a longitudinally extending cavity having oppositely disposed proximal and distal open ends, and wherein the needle cap is configured to be selectively moveable between a first position, in which the needle cap releasably engages the body and extends forwardly of the needle, and a second position, in which the needle cap is moved rearwardly relative to the body to expose a forwardly extending portion of the needle, and wherein the needle cap is completely releasable and removable from the body to fully expose the needle forwardly of the body.
