An elevator device, wherein a plurality of elevator cars each ascend and descend independently within the same hoistway. An inter-car shock absorber alleviates the impact of collisions between elevator cars. The operation modes of an elevator control device include: an independent operation mode in which each elevator car is caused to travel independently; and an adjacent synchronous operation mode in which elevator cars are caused to travel together synchronously, in a state in which same are in close proximity to each other. A monitoring standard distance is set in a safety control device. The safety control device determines that an error has occurred, if the distance between two adjacent elevator cars has exceeded the monitoring standard distance when the operation mode being used is the adjacent synchronous operation mode. |
