[Class 37] [See also Groups XL and XXXVIII] Electric oscillations are recorded by controlling a beam of ions to produce electric charges on an insulating surface which is then dusted with powder to render the record visible. An arc light 1, Fig. 1, acts as a source of ions and is adjacent to a metal plate 5 having a rubber facing 6. A varying potential 7 is applied between the plate 5 and arc 1 and the plate 5 is moved. The ions from the arc are attracted towards the plate 5 in accordance with the varying potential 7 and produce electrostatic charges on the rubber 6 which may be made visible by dusting with sulphur or minium. A diaphragm may be placed between the surface 6 and the arc 1, Fig. 3 (not shown), and an initial biassing potential may be applied to the diaphragm. The record surface 6 may be in the form of a drum having a cylindrical inner electrode 5. The source of ions may be a flame, a corona or gas discharge, or an incandescent metal coated with an electron-emitting substance. The ionic beam may be controlled magnetically.
