The profiling and analysis or identification of microorganisms by performing MALDI lipid or phospholipid analysis is disclosed wherein lipids are extracted using methanol or methanol/acetone, a lipid MALDI sample is prepared, preferably on 9AA (9-aminoacridine) and one of MALDI-TOF, MALDI-FTMS, MS/MS or another mass spectrometry analysis is performed to compare the sample to a known reference. Preferably a further analysis of a protein extract is performed using MALDI on CHCA matrix. Preferably a merged or combined protein/lipid mass spectrometry spectrum is generated. The identification of bacteria using MALDI-MS is exemplified. A kit of apparatus and standards to perform simultaneous protein and lipid profiling is also disclosed. |
