The present invention relates to a cattle mounting detection system and method using optical flow and gaussian mixture model in a video surveillance system and, more particularly to a system for a cattle mounting detection which includes: an image input unit (100) which obtains image information of detecting area by using a camera positioned in a side of the detecting area; and a detecting unit (200) which sets a region of interest (ROI) with respect to the image frame of the image information inputted from the image input unit (100), calculates motion vectors by using an optical flow, and detects animals behaviors within the detecting area by determining effectiveness of the motion vectors by using a gaussian mixture model.
