[Class 39 (i)] In an electric discharge lamp wherein an electrode 7 is inserted through the side of the envelope 1 and near the closed end 2, a shield 10 surrounds the electrode and has its inner end bent towards the closed end, so that when a number of lamps are used end to end in a sign, the discharge appears continuous; the shield causes the discharge to pass to the closed end. A layer 11 of luminescent material may be provided on the envelope. The shield may be of metal, porcelain or opal glass. The envelope may be straight or curved. |
