PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and systems for providing customized "haptic messaging" to users of handheld communication devices in a variety of applications.SOLUTION: A method for providing haptic messaging to a handheld communication device includes: associating an input signal with an event; determining a source of the user interface navigation event and selecting a control signal at least partially on the basis of the determination; and outputting the control signal to an actuator coupled to the handheld communication device. The control signal is configured to cause the actuator to output a haptic effect associated with the event. An event in the above may be a user interface navigation event.
