PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cancel the influence of the sensitivity variation of a light receiving unit of a paper width detection unit of each ink-jet-type printer. SOLUTION: A recording apparatus has a platen supporting a recording material, a record head which discharges liquid to the recording material supported by the platen, the paper width detection unit which emits light toward the platen, receives the reflected light from the platen so as to obtain a detection value thereof, and determines presence of the recording material on the platen, and a carriage shaft on which the record head and the paper width detection unit are mounted, which extends along a carriage which reciprocates with respect to the platen and in the reciprocating direction of the carriage, is disposed to be opposed to the platen, and supports the carriage. The platen has a measurement rib in which a step having a known height is formed. Based on the detection value of the reflected light obtained when light is emitted toward the step of the measurement rib, the paper width detection unit obtains the relation between the distance between the record head and the platen and the detection value of the reflected light from the platen.
