<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which performs tracking pattern judgement processing using an economical reader, that is, a reader whose reading range is narrow and arrangement is fixed. <P>SOLUTION: Tracking pattern data for forming a tracking pattern, for which a plurality of dot rows wherein a plurality of dots are arrayed in a main scanning direction are arrayed in a sub scanning direction and which is shifted in the main scanning direction by a read width each, for each page are generated (106). On the basis of the generated tracking pattern data, the tracking pattern is formed for each page on an intermediate transfer body (110).
