<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing device which sets the optimum exposure control and photographing sensitivity to a subject existing at a short distance, in particular during flash photographing, and also to provide an exposure control method. <P>SOLUTION: When a photographing switch is half depressed (S1 on), a face detecting part 74 performs face detection processing of image data outputted from a CCD 36, detects a face area, calculates the size (for example, size from forehead to chin) of the face area and outputs the size to a subject distance calculating part 76. The subject distance calculating part 76 calculates a distance (subject distance) L from the photographing device 1 to the face of the subject on the basis of the size of the face area inputted from the face detecting part 74. The information of the subject distance L calculated by the subject distance calculating part 76 is outputted to a CPU 10.
