PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve ductility of a high-strength highly elastic aromatic polymer by incorporating a novel halogenated aromatic compound as a terminal-blocking compound for a telechelic polyarylene oligomer. SOLUTION: The specific novel halogenated aromatic compound represented by general formula (1) is useful as the terminal-blocking compound in the preparation of the telechelic aromatic oligomer. In the formula, X is a halogen atom other than fluorine, or the like; Y is a fluorine atom or a group represented by the formula: -NO<SB>2</SB>; Z is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, or a bivalent electron-withdrawing group selected from the group consisting of -SO<SB>2</SB>- and the like; W<SP>1</SP>and W<SP>2</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom, or a monovalent electron-withdrawing group selected from the group consisting of -COAr, -CONHAr, -COO, -COOAr, -CN and -SO<SB>2</SB>Ar; Ar is a phenyl group or a naphthyl group; and R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group or an aryloxy group.
