Active substances, specific for the decomposition of foreign proteins of diseased tissues of the body, are obtained by growing proteolytic micro-organisms on proteins of the types to be decomposed and extracting, from the products of the growths, liquids which contain the active substances. The process is described by reference to the treatment of carcinoma tissue and the lenses of pigs which become cataractous shortly after their removal and are therefore to be regarded as equivalent to diseased living tissue. The tissue in question is placed in a liquid culture medium, e.g. NaCl solution and inoculated with a culture of proteolytic bacteria, e.g. B. subtilis, B. histrolyticus, B. prodigiosis, B. proteus. After a sufficient time, e.g. 24 hours and upwards, the active preparation is separated by centrifuging and filtration. The preparation may be adjusted by acidification or alkalinization. Treatment of sarcomatous and tuberculous tissue is also referred to.
