PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization separation element which has a structure different from a wire grid polarizer or a photonic polarizing element and is based on a principle different from the same. SOLUTION: The polarization separation element has a three-dimensional metal structure arrangement formed by stacking fine dot patterns DP1, DP2.. which are prepared by two-dimensionally arranging dot-like metal structures smaller than wavelength of incident light, in multi-layer into a retention medium HMD leaving a prescribed interval on a support base BS, whereby the three-dimensional metal structure arrangement is determined such that transmission light intensities or reflection light intensities with respect to two orthogonal polarization components in the incident light made incident at a desired incident angle is differentiated from each other.
