PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a dinitrotoluene, comprising reacting toluene with nitric acid in the presence of sulfuric acid to form the dinitrotoluene, and enabling a high toluene conversion, a high selectivity to DNT, the high selective utilization of the nitric acid directly fed at a reaction step, and simple plant adjustments. SOLUTION: The two step nitration method for the dinitrotoluene is characterized in that (1) the mass ratio of an aqueous phase to an organic phase in a mononitration process is higher than 2:1; (2) an organic phase is dispersed in an acid-containing aqueous phase in each nitration reaction; and (3) an amount of the used nitric acid per mole of the toluene is <2.06 mole.
