PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article transfer device capable of accurately gripping an article over a long period, by preventing excessive gripping force from acting on the gripping article. SOLUTION: This article transfer device has a mast movably erected in the substantially horizontal direction, a lifting stage 6 liftably supported along the mast, a lifting device for lifting the lifting stage 6, and a pair of forks 10 arranged on the lifting stage 6, freely expandable in the opposite direction to a rack of juxtaposed storages and gripping the article W by moving in the horizontal direction orthogonal to the opposed direction, and is provided with a control means 14 controlling the gripping force for gripping the article W, by controlling a current value of a first electric motor 11d for horizontally moving the pair of forks 10.
