The method involves activating sensors e.g. ultrasonic sensor, for the measurement of distances between objects when the vehicle (V) e.g. car, speed is smaller than a given threshold value. Signals of the sensors are evaluated by comparing the information received from the signals with predetermined samples (M1, M2). A determination is made whether the objects detected on the right and left side of the vehicle are moving in a longitudinal direction.
