PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism which is capable of adjustment of positions of an optical fiber and an optical element with precision in the order of 10μm or better easily in a short time, has a large adjustment range and is suitable for downsizing. SOLUTION: The position adjustment mechanism 10 of an optical system is for centering two optical elements so as to be optically coupled. The position adjustment mechanism is provided with: an arm 12 which holds one of the optical elements at the end part; a column 14 which is erected on a substrate; an arm holder 16 which is rockable around the column and allows the arm linearly slide in a direction perpendicular to the optical axis of the optical elements; an arm displacement means (adjustment bolt 18 or the like) which allows the arm slide with respect to the arm holder; and a fixing means (fixing screw 20) which fixes the arm and the arm holder on the substrate.
