PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a testing method and apparatus for solving the following problems; a first one of the problems is that since a program-controlled on-board failure diagnosis apparatus yields a diagnosis result indicating only "NORMAL" or "ABNORMAL", it is uncertain whether the apparatus has yielded the result in accordance with a correct diagnosis, and specially, a second one of the problems is that when a driver or administrator of a vehicle is afraid that the vehicle might have some sort of problem due to other problems found in the vehicle, the driver or administrator is unsure of a result indicating "NORMAL". SOLUTION: In addition to predetermined tests conducted respectively on one or more functions, a test whose standard has been temporarily set to be stricter can be conducted. When the test yields a result indicating "ABNORMAL", it can be understood that the predetermined tests have been conducted correctly to yield results indicating "NORMAL". COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
